UMD’s Applied Economics Students Learn from Renowned Economist

This month, the Economics Department hosted the fourth Neil Moskowitz Economics Lecture, given by Matthew Gentzkow entitled “Social Media and Social Good.” Matthew Gentzkow is Landau Professor in Technology and the Economy at Stanford University.

The first Moskowitz speaker, Daron Acemoglu, was co-recipient of the 2024 Economics Nobel Prize. This lecture series brings high profile academic and policy-making economists to campus to talk about what economic research can tell us about the contemporary challenges facing countries and societies across the globe. The lecture series is named in honor of Neil Moskowitz, a UMD Economics alumnus who continues to support our department and college in many important ways.

Applied Economics Master’s Student & Star Lacrosse Goalkeeper Wins Big

Second-year MS in Applied Economics student Logan McNaney dominated a recent rematch lacrosse game against Notre Dame, as reported in The Diamondback.

In last season’s national championship game against Notre Dame, the star goalkeeper allowed the third most goals in his career and Maryland lost badly. But this time, ranking eighth nationwide for goals allowed per game, he saved 16 shots, held their offense to just 10 goals, and majorly contributed to the Terps’ 11-10 win. This is, of course, all while finishing out his time in the rigorous master’s program.

UMD’s Applied Economics Program: Launching International Careers In DC

Early in the year, our MS program in Applied Economics puts on an annual F1 Visa Alumni Panel, a discussion and event that’s an opportunity for students to socialize, network, and gain insight from former F1 visa students who have graduated from the Applied Economics program at University of Maryland and are successfully working in the Washington, DC area. The discussion focused on the transition into employment for international students who are on F1 visas while enrolled in our program.

This year’s panelists (below) spoke about their different work areas as well as strategies for successfully finding a job in economics after finishing the program:

  • Pooja Ravi (’23 grad): Formerly worked at Xome, currently at Ernst & Young.
  • Aayushi Gupta (’23 grad): Worked at Center for Global Sustainability, currently at World Bank.
  • Aniruddh Dutta (’23 grad): Has been working as an analyst at Econ One Research.
  • Fuda Jiang (’19 grad): Formerly worked at IMF, currently at World Bank.
  • Anom Dule (’23 grad): Currently at World Bank

We also had the invaluable Jody Heckman-Bose, Associate Director of the university’s International Student and Scholar Service (ISSS), join our panel to answer questions and clarify processes for F1 students.
